A crown is a natural-looking solution for damaged or weakened teeth. A crown is a "protective cap" that restores the appearance and strength of the tooth. Your dentist will recommend a crown when the tooth is too damaged, and a regular filling is not reliable.

When is a crown called for?:

• If the tooth has a large cavity and leaves very little natural tooth  behind.
• Teeth that have become very brittle over time after being treated with root canals, especially molars that are used to chew. 
• When decay in the tooth is large and deep, and a filling is not strong enough.

A tooth may need to be removed if:

• It is badly broken.
• It has a deep cavity that cannot be repaired with a filling or crown.
• Bacteria reached the inside of the tooth where the nerve is and the infection is too severe to fix with a root canal.

• Wisdom teeth do not have enough room to properly grow
• A tooth was badly injured and cannot be saved.

Some have a metal framework with metal clasps to improve retention. Some are made of a flexible acrylic that hugs the gums and remaining teeth to keep the denture from moving while talking and eating.
